I moved to Perry Common in August 2001, this was the start of a whole new life! Having had to give up work in 1997 I’d spent just over 4 years housebound due to a back problem, but now in Perry Common and living near the Extra Care Scheme, things began to change. I was invited to a community meeting regarding the health centre on Capilano Road, which is where I caught the bug “Serial Volunteering” as it’s know in WLCA!
Having gained back much of my confidence I decided to apply for the WLCA Board of Directors in the elections held in 2003 and to my surprise and utter terror I was accepted to join as a Volunteer Resident Director.
Four years on, I still love it! I feel I can help make a difference and I’m part of the community. This is my way of giving back to a community that has given me more than they know in return.
